Finding the source of water damage is an essential first step in restoring damaged property, but it’s not always easy.
In general, water will move downward, so start by looking above the location of the water damage. However, water can move upward in some situations. For example, sewage can back up when it’s pushed by water at a higher elevation elsewhere in the system. Similarly, water can move up through a basement floor if the groundwater level is higher than the floor. Water can also move upward by siphoning through porous materials (such as drywall) if it can ultimately move down to a lower level.
